Darryl served in the Army, with a tour in Vietnam, from March, 1968 to May, 1969, assigned to the First Infantry Division, Bravo Company. His initial nine months were with an infantry platoon, during which he was awarded the Bronze Star; then to a mortar platoon. He was promoted to E5, serving as company clerk for the remainder of his tour.
